Just Ruth: A Playful Font for Joyful Branding

I was working on a branding project for a small boutique that sells handmade candles and skincare products. The client wanted something warm, inviting, and a little whimsical to match their product’s natural, artisanal feel. As I opened my brand board, I knew I needed the right font to bring the identity to life. That’s when I stumbled upon Just Ruth—a quirky handwritten font that immediately felt like the perfect fit.

Just Ruth is an adorable, quirky handwritten font with a charming personality that radiates joy. Its playful curves and gentle slant give it a hand-drawn authenticity that feels personal and approachable. It’s not too ornate or overly stylized, which makes it incredibly versatile for creative projects that need a touch of warmth without sacrificing readability.

A First Test: Logo Mockups

I started by testing Just Ruth in the logo mockups. The client had provided a few name ideas, and I quickly realized how well this font worked for short-form text. It had just the right amount of character to make the brand feel friendly and unique. When paired with a clean sans serif font for supporting text, it created a balanced visual hierarchy that felt both professional and inviting.

I experimented with different weights and spacing to see how it would look on a shop sign and business cards. The font looked great on a wooden sign with a matte finish, giving the boutique an earthy, organic vibe. It also performed well on digital assets like Instagram posts and website headers, where its soft, handwritten style added a sense of authenticity that resonated with the target audience.

Branding Applications Beyond the Logo

As I moved into the broader brand identity, I found that Just Ruth worked beautifully across various design elements. For packaging, I used it on label stickers and product tags. The font’s playful nature made the labels stand out without overwhelming the design. On the back of the candle jars, it helped create a sense of intimacy, as if the message was written by someone you could trust.

In editorial design, such as the boutique’s blog or newsletter, I used Just Ruth for headlines and callout sections. It brought a sense of fun to the content while keeping the overall tone consistent with the brand’s voice. For social media graphics, the font was eye-catching and helped drive engagement, especially on platforms like Instagram where visual appeal plays a big role.

Even in printed marketing materials like flyers and posters, Just Ruth added a unique touch. It didn’t overpower the design but instead enhanced the overall mood, making the brand feel more human and relatable.

Design Considerations and Practical Tips

While Just Ruth is a display font, it’s important to use it thoughtfully. I found that it works best as a headline or accent font rather than for large blocks of text. Pairing it with a complementary serif or sans serif font helps maintain readability and balance in longer formats.

I also recommend testing the font across different mediums before committing to it in a full brand system. How it looks on a screen versus print can vary, and checking file formats, multilingual support, and commercial licensing are essential steps for any designer working on client projects.

For this particular project, I chose to pair Just Ruth with a modern sans serif font for body copy. This combination gave the brand a polished yet approachable look. I also explored using it in conjunction with other script fonts for a layered effect in some designs, though I kept it subtle to avoid clutter.

One thing I noticed during the process was how well Just Ruth adapted to different color palettes. Whether it was paired with muted pastels or bold, earthy tones, the font maintained its charm and didn’t lose its legibility. This flexibility made it a great choice for a wide range of brand applications.

Final Thoughts on Using Just Ruth

Overall, Just Ruth proved to be a valuable addition to the brand identity. It helped convey the boutique’s personality and values through typography, creating a cohesive and memorable visual language. If you’re working on a project that needs a touch of playfulness and warmth, this font is definitely worth considering.

As with any display font, it’s important to test it thoroughly in context. But when used correctly, Just Ruth can elevate your designs and add a joyful, human touch that resonates with audiences. Whether you're designing for a small café, skincare brand, or creative studio, this quirky handwritten font has the potential to become a standout element in your brand’s visual storytelling.
